Multimedia Portal (Canto)

Canto is the Mines multimedia repository, a digital asset management system created to organize and store our library of photos and videos. Designed to support collaboration across departments, Canto offers a centralized, user-friendly platform where faculty, staff, and partners can access high-quality visual assets. With powerful search functionality and secure sharing options, our digital media is easy to find and share.

Accessing Canto (Media Repository)

Whether you need visuals for a presentation, marketing materials, or a campus project, the repository is your source for brand-aligned assets. Explore the collection at mines.edu/multimedia.

Search Bar

Narrow down your search by hovering over the Search Icon to see a drop-down menu where you can modify your query details, like searching only for information in the Custom Fields, or the Filename, or using use Boolean logic (AND / OR).

Search by exclusion by placing a “-” before a word (i.e., -students would result in assets that do not contain “students” as a piece of metadata)

Use a wildcard “*” to search for anything matching a string of characters (i.e., car* may provide results for “caring”)

Tip: If you are receiving too many results, try disabling the AI search.

AI Enabled/Disabled

Toggle the AI button in the search bar to enable or disable Canto’s AI Visual Search feature. This is particularly useful for general search terms and less for Mines-specific ones. Try searching “close-up of student in science lab”.

Filter Panel

The filter panel on the right, will provide you all of the Custom Fields, and other filters to narrow down your search, like searching by file type.

Folder Structure

Use the folder structure on the left to search for assets in folders and albums.

Downloading Assets

Select an Asset

Click on the thumbnail of the asset you wish to download or click the white circle on each asset thumbnail to select multiple assets.

Download the Asset

Click the Download icon to initiate the download.

Choose Download Options

Select either the original format or use the cropping and resizing tools to adjust the image before downloading. For convenience, you can also use Download Presets configured for popular mediums, such as the Mines website or social media.

Resizing Using Presets

If you are downloading an asset other than the Original setting, make sure to select the resize radio button in the bottom right corner of the image settings.

Once resize has been selected, choose the next button. This will crop and resize your image and prepare it for download.

The final step is to select the download button.

Sharing Assets

Select an Asset or Multiple Assets

Click on the thumbnail of the asset you wish to download or select multiple assets by clicking the white circle when hovering over the top right of each asset thumbnail to select multiple assets.

Click the Share Icon

Hover your mouse to the share icon and click it.

Customize the Share Link

Create a name for the link, and designate if you would like to password-protect it or assign it an expiration date.

Asset Details

Viewing Details

When you select an individual image, you will be presented with a “preview panel” where you can find in-depth details of that specific asset,

If you continue to scroll down on the right-hand side of the preview panel, you will access an “information page” which displays the asset’s details in a full-width view.

To exit the preview panel or information page, simply select the “X” at the top right corner.

Image Use Rights, Copyright, and Permissions

Guidelines for Using Images from Canto 

The images and multimedia assets available in the Canto portal are intended to support the marketing, communication, and visual needs of Colorado School of Mines faculty, staff, and approved campus partners. All assets are subject to copyright protection and other intellectual property laws. Users are responsible for ensuring their use aligns with the following guidelines: 

  1. Permitted Use:
  • Assets may be used for official Mines purposes only, including, for example, internal communications, presentations, promotional materials, social media, and websites affiliated with Mines. 
  • Resale or any unauthorized use is strictly prohibited. 
  • Limited personal use is allowed (e.g., printing photos for personal display or sharing within private social groups) as long as images are not altered, sold, or publicly distributed in ways that misrepresent Colorado School of Mines. 
  • If you are unsure whether your intended use is appropriate, contact Communications & Marketing for clarification at communcations@mines.edu. 
  1. Ownership and Copyright:
  • Unless otherwise noted, assets within the Canto portal are the property of Colorado School of Mines or have been licensed for Mines’ use. 
  • Downloading or distributing assets outside the permitted uses may constitute copyright infringement and expose the offending individuals to personal legal liability. 
  1. Third-Party and External Sharing:
  • Images cannot be shared outside of Mines (e.g. media outlets, vendors, partners) without explicit written permission from Mines Communications & Marketing. This includes, for example, requests for images for commercial use, editorial coverage and partnership collateral. 
  1. Attribution and Credit:
  • Credit is not required for internal Mines use. 
  • When publishing externally, particularly in media or collaborative projects, credit as:

  1. Reporting Copyright Concerns:
  • If you suspect an image may be misused or believe a copyright violation has occurred, please report it immediately to:

SSO Access

To gain access to additional Canto features and Mines staff headshots, submit a ticket through the Mines Help Center. In your request, ask for SSO access to Canto and to be added to the CantoRoleConsumer” group/role in Okta.
